Chris Petersen rumors fly anytime a big time program has an opening and so it's hard to take just a normal rumor seriously, however multiple outlets are reporting that Petersen will indeed interview for the Badgers football head coaching position. First the Wisconsin State Journal speculated that it would be happening and then earlier on Friday Madison radio station The Big 1070 began reporting that two sources were telling them Petersen would interview with Alvarez on Monday.
Petersen has consistently shot down rumors of him leaving for other jobs in the past and he has deflected questions up until as late as yesterday. He is a hot coaching name because of what he's accomplished at Boise State where he holds an 83-8 record (.912 winning percentage) in his seven seasons with the Broncos. He is the winningest coach in FBS football since he's tenure began in Boise.
What is interesting is this would be a vast departure for Wisconsin as the last two hires have been defensive coordinators in Alvarez and Bielema. Petersen's offense may bit a bit flashier than what Wisconsin runs, but don't mistake that for the fact that he doesn't have the ability to build the offense around a power running game or behind a great offensive line. In fact, Boise State's offensive line allowed just six sacks this season with a less than "mobile" QB behind them.
If you just think of Boise State as some gimmick offense then you haven't been paying attention at all. Does the name Doug Martin ring a bell? He's the ex-Bronco running back that is currently tearing it up in the NFL as a rookie. As a team they had 442 rushing attempts for 2,077 yards, averaging 4.7 yards a carry and had 25 TD's as a team with a whole new QB and running back in that backfield this season.
Of course there's a lot to take a look at and nothing is ever set in stone when it comes to coaching searches, but we do know that Monday will be the first day Alvarez will be conducting interviews and if true getting Petersen to even accept an interview is a huge step to begin with.
